ImageAssenovgrad is a town in Southern Bulgaria. It is located 19 km. south of Plovdiv. Medieval name is Assenovgrad Stanimaka (Stanimahos). In 1934 year was renamed to Assenovgrad in honour of King Ivan Assen. Above the town are the remains of the fortress - an old fortress, that during King Ivan Assen II has become an important military post on the defence of  southern borders of the Bulgarian kingdom. The fortress is among the hundredth national tourist places of interest and it is open all over the year for visitors. Dozens of visitors go for a walk to the rock every day.

The city is famous for its many churches, monasteries and chapels, and it is often called Little Jerusalem. There are over 50 Christian temples in the vicinity of the city. Assenovgrad is the only resort in Bulgaria in which surroundings have five monasteries - Kuklenski, Gornovodenski, Bachkovski, Muldavski and Arapovski. Other cultural sights of the town are historical, ethnographic, palaeontological and wine museums.

Image It is remarked a natural phenomenon Night breeze in the town – a soft wind that appears late in the afternoon and it stops about ten o’clock in the morning. The main reason of its appearance is the different heating of air between the plane and mountains. The Night breeze is an excellent regulator of the wine fermentation and that is why Assenovgrad is well known  as wine and vine-growing center. The town is also famous abroad for its preserved wine tradition and mostly for its stanimashka Malaga and assenovgradski Mavrud.

 Otherwise Assenovgrad is well-known as "The city of wedding dresses because of the large number of bridal shops for such a small town.
